Choosing Scents for People
Next to sight, the sense of smell is the most powerful to those seeking a base connection. It draws others to us because it evokes an essence about "who" we are as individuals. Choose the right scent and you just may draw the right individual to you. However, choose the wrong one and the results may not be so successful. So how do you go about choosing the right scent when you want to choose it for someone else?

  • Make a list of the scents that they like or you associate with them.

  • Make a list of the scents that they don't like. Be detailed.

  • If you know them well, take a sneaky peak at what they already on hand. Try and identify which ones they use most often (e.g. their daily perfume) and the ones they barely use (the bath salts they got last xmas!) This will give you insight into their subconscious scent preferences.

  • If you really can’t figure out what they like, take a trip to a local department store that has an extensive fragrance department and have them spray some scent choices for you to review.

  • Ask other people who know them well for their ideas about your recipients scent preferences.

  • Write down the attributes of their personality that best define them as an individual. If they remain virtually within a narrow corridor like "intelligent, serious, and sophisticated" or "bubbly, outgoing, and sensitive," then you may be able to find a single scent that will suit. On the other hand, if the characteristics are all over the map, choosing a single scent to represent may be much more difficult.

  • Think about the season - For example, they may love floral scents during the spring and summer when their sparkling personality is at its height; but they might prefer spicy musk-like scents in the autumn and winter when they tend to be a bit more grounded and serious.

  • Be honest with yourself about what you want the scent to accomplish. Is it just to reflect who they are as a person? Is it to lighten your mood or stimulate relaxation? Is it to attract others?

  • Match the personality attributes that you have written down and the things that you want to accomplish with your scent choice.

Hopefully you can now choose the right bath bomb for your friend or relative.
