How we feel and how we want to feel are the drivers behind our choices and preferences when it comes to bath bombs (and many other scented products)
When we breathe, the tiny molecules of vaporised essential oils from the bath bombs stimulate odour receptors situated at the base of the nose. These receptors are directly connected to a part of the brain called the Limbic System which is responsible for emotions, moods and memory. In this way, the properties of essential oils have the power to affect our moods in a positive and balancing way. The essential oils of plants and flowers which are used in bath bombs evoke feelings of calm and/or relaxation; they can help us concentrate, and can even be aphrodisiacs.
Scent and our sense of smell is also very powerful in evoking feelings and memories – for example the smell of the sea air makes most people calm and relaxed, the smell of pine may remind us of childhood Christmases and an old perfume can take us back in our mind to being with an old lover.
The best way to choose a bath bomb is to think about how you feel right now and how do you want to feel after your bath.
